Infinite loveIn honor of American Heart Month, here are 10 ways to keep your heart healthy for you and the people you love:

  1. Eat a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit saturated fat, trans fats and cholesterol and add more fiber* to prevent high cholesterol. Limiting salt can help lower blood pressure.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of heart disease.
  3. Exercise. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends 30 minutes daily of moderate-intensity physical activity. This helps maintain healthy weight, cholesterol and blood pressure.
  4. Monitor blood pressure. High blood pressure can damage your heart and blood vessels. It has no symptoms, so make sure to check it regularly – at home, a doctor’s office or your local pharmacy.
  5. Don’t smoke. Smoking greatly increases heart-disease risk. If you don’t smoke, don’t start; if you already smoke, quit as soon as possible. Your doctor can help.
  6. Limit alcohol. Too much alcohol can increase blood pressure. Suggested limits: two drinks a day for men, one for women.
  7. Check cholesterol. Levels should be tested at least once every five years. If your cholesterol is high, talk to your doctor about treatment.
  8. Manage diabetes. Controlling blood sugar is important for a healthy heart and blood vessels. If you have diabetes, closely monitor blood sugar and work with your doctor on treatment.
  9. Take your meds. If your doctor has prescribed medicine for high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, follow instructions carefully and ask questions if there’s anything you don’t understand.
  10. Take it one step at a time. Keeping your heart healthy is a lifelong process that can begin with small lifestyle changes. Ask family and friends to join you in the process, and don’t get overwhelmed.
