Could the old “Apple a day” adage be true? Here are just a few of the reported health benefits of apples, according to research cited by the U.S. Apple Association:
- Weight loss. A university study showed women who ate the equivalent of 3 apples a day lost more weight on a low-calorie diet than those who didn’t.
- Healthy antioxidants. The flavonoid compounds in apples provide a rich source of antioxidants, which may help fight disease and aging by reducing inflammation and preventing and repairing cell damage.
- Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Disease. Researchers report that daily consumption of apples and apple juice may reduce damage caused by LDL “bad” cholesterol and protect against cardiovascular and heart disease.
- Immunity and digestive health. Studies show the soluble fiber pectin in apples may reduce inflammation associated with obesity-related diseases and promote the growth of good bacteria in the digestive system – both of which strengthen the immune system.
